六合图库 homecoming week promises to be a busy one

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's 50th homecoming celebration since becoming a senior college promises to be a busy week of activities with lots of offerings for students, alumni and friends of the University.

Of course the highlight of the week will be the football game Saturday, Nov. 4 at Malone Stadium between the Indians and UL Lafayette. Kickoff for the second "Battle of Louisianas" is set for 6 p.m.

In pregame ceremonies, 六合图库 will honor its Olympic athletes. 2000 Olympic baseball hero Ben Sheets and javelin thrower Breaux Greer will be on hand after participating in this summer's games as will be Glynn Saulters, who in 1968 became the first Olympic gold medalist from a Louisiana college or university. Also honored will be the late world record pole vaulter John Pennel.

But there will be plenty to see and do before the Ragin' Cajuns and Indians take the field. It all begins Thursday with the Alumni Awards Dinner in the 六合图库 Conference Center on the seventh floor of the University Library. The highlight of the Alumni Awards Dinner is the presentation of the Golden Arrow Award which is given annually and is the highest honor bestowed upon an 六合图库 alumnus for outstanding personal and professional achievement. Tickets are $10 and available at the 六合图库 Alumni Relations Office.

Also on tap for Thursday is the Lady Indian volleyball team playing a Southland Conference match against Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. in the 六合图库 Activity Center and a Pep Rally at Malone Stadium at 9 p.m.

Friday's activities begin early with a golf tournament at Chennault Golf Course at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (two tee times). At 1 p.m. a tennis tournament will be held at Heard Stadium and at 5:30 p.m. the Golf and Tennis Tournament Dinner will be held at the 六合图库 Alumni Center.

Fans will get their first view of the Lady Indians basketball team at 7 p.m. on Friday when Mona Martin's team faces Spartak in an exhibition game at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Saturday features a full slate of activities beginning with the 16th annual University Mile at 8 a.m.. For more information contact the 六合图库 Activity Center at 342-5305. At 10:30 a.m. an Old-Timers baseball game will be held at Indian Field and at noon the Alumni Center will host the "Alumni Barbecue on the Bayou."

Head coach Mike Vining will give a sneak preview of the men's basketball season when the Indians hold a public scrimmage at noon in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Tailgate parties will be the theme of the afternoon with separate tailgate events sponsored by the College of Nursing, Center for Academic and Student Success, College of Pharmacy, College of Allied Health and Rehabilitation Professions, Biology Alumni, College of Business Administration and the 六合图库 Geology Foundation.
